Disney's 39th Silly Symphony cartoon The Pied Piper is released. Directed by Wilfred
Jackson, it is based on the classic tale of a mysterious piper who rids a town of its rat infestation with his music.
1955:
Disneyland's Canal Boats of the World attraction closes after 2 months of operation. It will be revamped and renamed Storyland Canal Boats.
1958:
Actress Jennifer Tilly, the voice of Celia in Disney's 2001 Monsters, Inc. and Madame Leota in Disney's 2003 live-action The Haunted Mansion, is born in Harbor City, California.
1963:
Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Richard Marx is born in Winnetka, Illinois. His song "Remember When" (performed by LeAnn Rimes) was composed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of
Disneyland. Disney's 2006 Bambi II features his song "Through Your Eyes." In 2009 Marx and his band
performed at Epcot as part of the Eat to the Beat Concert Series during the International Food & Wine Festival.
(Marx had a string of hit singles in the late 1980s and 1990s, including "Endless Summer Nights", "Right Here
Waiting", "Now and Forever", and "Hazard".)

Disney's Wonderful World airs part 2 of "The Absent-Minded Professor."
1993:
The Disneyana Convention 1993 kicks off for 4 days at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, California.
2001:
"Walt: The Man Behind the Myth," a TV special about Walt Disney, airs as part of The Wonderful World of Disney on ABC. Narrated by Dick Van Dyke, the 2-hour show features interviews with some of the people who knew Walt best.

2006:
Disney World's Cinderellabration gives its final performance.

"Handy Manny," a new animated series for preschoolers, debuts on Disney Channel's Playhouse Disney. Actor Wilmer Valderrama (best known from the hit series That 70's Show) stars in the title role of Manny Garcia, a cheerful handyman.

The 8th Annual Walt Disney's Hometown Toonfest takes place in Marceline, Missouri.
1984:
The Restaurant el Marrakesh opens in the Morocco Pavilion at EPCOT.
1997:
Walt Disney Records reissues the soundtrack to the
animated feature The Jungle Book. The compact disc includes
a recorded interview with the Sherman Brothers, demo material,
and two rare songs from the original 1969 record album.
A young Walt Disney
and his family lived in
Marceline, Missouri
from 1906-1911.
Also reissued on this day is the soundtrack to the animated feature Dumbo. This disc features an instrumental version of "Spread Your Wings" performed by composer Oliver Wallace (who wrote a majority of the film's music).
1992:
Nicholas Jerry "Nick" Jonas, the youngest member of the Jonas Brothers trio, is
born in Dallas, Texas. At the age of 6 he will be discovered while singing at a barber shop and be
referred to a professional show business manager. The following year, Jonas will begin performing on Broadway
- which in 2002 will include a stint as Chip in Disney's Beauty and the Beast.
2008:
Disney World formally reveals plans for its Bay Lake Tower at Disney World's
Contemporary Resort - confirming earlier reports that the 15-story tower rising just
beyond the Magic Kingdom will be used for time shares. Disney also unveils plans to sell time
shares at the Treehouse Villas at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa.

Over at Disneyland, the second new Mark VII, Blue, monorail goes into service.

1919:
Television director, actor and television screenwriter Lawrence Dobkin is born in Los
Angeles, California. He was the original narrator of WDW's The Hall of Presidents between 1971-1973 and
again later between 2001-2008. (Beginning in 1958 he announced the landmark television series Naked City,
closing each episode with the famous statement, "There are eight million stories in the naked city, and this has
been one of them.")
1941:
Two days after the official end of the strike at the Disney Studio, work finally resumes with 694 employees on the payroll, down from 1200.
2010:
The Disney Parks Blog releases concept art and launches its new web page for
Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, a new Disney Value Resort under construction at
Walt Disney World.
2011:
Marceline, a film by Andy Neitzert, screens at the Uptown Theater in Marceline, Missouri, as part of the town's Walt Disney's Hometown Toonfest weekend. The documentary explores the ways in which the north-central Missouri town’s narrative and the story of Walt
Disney himself converge. Marceline will play again on Sunday the 18th.

Halloween Time at Disneyland Resort begins. The spirit of Halloween Time
invades Disneyland Resort with Disney villains, Mickey Mouse and his friends in Halloween
costumes, along with the seasonal transformations of Haunted Mansion into Haunted Mansion
Holiday and Space Mountain into Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy.

Disney’s Newsies, the Musical premieres at Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New York. Jeremy Jordan (who recently made his Broadway debut in Rock of Ages) stars in this stage version of the 1992 Disney film about the notable newsboys strike of 1899 in New York City. Eight-time Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken, who wrote the songs for the original movie, was brought back to pen additional songs for the score.

Three weeks after "Here Come the Muppets" closes, another stage show called
"Muppets on Location" opens on a stage near the "Muppet*Vision 3-D Theater"
at Disney-MGM Studios. The show features human-sized walkaround versions of the characters.
